Revitalized Daniil Medvedev Secures First Title in Over Two Years

Nineteen of Daniil Medvedev's 21 championships have been achieved on hardcourt

A resurgent Medvedev claimed his initial championship for over two years with a win over Corentin Moutet in the competition championship match.

The Russian, a former number one, has had a torrid year, winning just one match at the big events and undergoing a difficult moment at the New York tournament.

His inconsistency on the tennis tour - and issues with his serve in particular - caused him exiting of the world's top 10 and finally splitting with former mentor his previous coach.

Presently working with Johansson and his other coach, Medvedev has consistently improved in the last few weeks - culminating in a closely contested three-set triumph over challenger Moutet.

This represents his first championship since the Rome competition and initial on a hardcourt after spring of 2023.

Success also means he has achieved 21 titles at twenty-one distinct tournaments.

"This marks the first occasion I am participating in a event with my both daughters simultaneously, so to get a trophy is particularly special," commented world number 14 Medvedev.

"This title is in tribute of my younger daughter Victoria, because the initial championship I achieved when my first daughter my daughter was born was for her."

The athlete, the past champion, had failed in his previous six finals, including in Halle earlier this year.

The player's counter-punching approach and recurring outbursts on the playing surface had led observers to doubt if his capacity to perform at the top level was over.

But the athlete has made changes in recent weeks, striving to advance forward and perform assertively, supported by an improved serve.

The champion came back from a disadvantage in the opening set against the challenging opponent, taking four of the final five points to gain the advantage.

The competitors exchanged service breaks in the second set before Moutet, bidding for his initial tour title, took control to create a third set.

Moutet defended 4 early opportunities in a close final set before the champion won the break to that score to close out the victory.

Fittingly, he clinched victory with a rally at the net, with the Frenchman failing to manage a volley after over two and a half hours.
